Coach Wanted
Team Rutherford
Job Title Head Swim Coach - 2025 Season
Job Description
Rutherford Area Swim Club is hiring a Head Coach for their NVSL summer swim team for the 2025
season. The Rutherford Water Rats seek a positive, high-energy coach to join our fun and hard-working
community of swimmers. A successful candidate will manage and develop the “coach team” and focus on
stroke development, technique, and race strategies while also fostering team spirit, modeling good
sportsmanship, and having fun!

The Head Coach is expected to attend all practices, meets, and official team events, including pep rallies,
and an end-of-season banquet. The Water Rats have approximately 120 swimmers, ages ranging from 4
through 18, and competed in NVSL Division 16 during the 2024 season. In addition to the NVSL team,
the Water Rats develop younger swimmers on a junior development team (the Little Rats). The season
starts with evening practices from after Memorial Day until the end of FCPS school year. Morning
practices start June 12, through Individual All-Stars meet on July 26. Meets are held on Monday nights
and Saturday mornings with 2 additional Wednesday night relay meets on July 2 and July 9; pep rallies
are Friday evenings.

Our team operates in a low-stress, family fun environment with a strong parent volunteer base which
handles the bulk of administrative functions throughout the season. This is a great opportunity for a Head
Coach who is looking to build a program for a smaller team of swimmers with a range of athletic abilities.

Additional Head Coach responsibilities:

- Foster a fun, positive, safe, and inclusive experience for swimmers of all skill levels.
- Develop and implement pool and dryland practice plans for swimmers across all age groups and develop coaching staff in executing these plans.
- Provide constructive feedback to swimmers on their performance and stroke technique during practices and meets.
- Mentor and manage the swim team coaching staff, including assistant and junior coaches.
- Work collaboratively with the Little Rats developmental swim program to ensure a smooth transition for younger swimmers into the competitive team.
- Lead at all swim meets, pep rallies, and social events, contributing to team spirit and morale.
- Plan and lead A & B-meet preparation, including creating competitive A & B-meet sheets, reviewing and approving meet entries, and confirming swimmer eligibility.
- Cultivate and promote the Water Rat team culture, emphasizing positivity, sportsmanship, and fun. Coordinate team cheers, select themes for meets and pep rallies, celebrate swimmer achievements, and model good sportsmanship.
- Collaborate with Swim Team Reps during the off-season to plan staffing and season activities.
- Support fundraising opportunities. Improve and expand the program; recruit new members.

Qualifications include:

- 3-5+ years of swim coaching experience.
- 1-2+ years of NVSL coaching experience (NVSL head coaching experience preferred).
- Strong knowledge of USA swimming and NVSL rules and regulations.
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- A commitment to fostering a positive team culture and promoting good sportsmanship.
- Lifeguard, CPR, and Pool operator’s license (or willingness to get certified).
