The Newington Forest Community Association Swim Team has two openings for paid positions for Summer 2025: 1) Assistant Coach; and 2) Minis Coach. Assistant Coach

  • Attend all practices, meets, social events, and spirit events with safety as the priority.

  • Help lead practices, making sure they are appropriate for each age level in skill and duration.  All four racings strokes, starts, and turns will be worked on throughout the season.

  • Make sure that skills are taught correctly and that swimmers see skills demonstrated and have hands-on corrections for their individual strokes.

  • Monitor swimmers in the water, and should be positioned on deck or in the water to maximize safety.  Coaching from a chair is not acceptable.

  • Come dressed to swim and should plan to spend time in the water each day.

  • Work collaboratively with Coaches to create a fun atmosphere and make social events open to all team members.

  • Utilize appropriate communication and interpersonal skills with children, parents, and coaching staff.

  • Be an exemplary role model and leader at all team events.

  • Assist Head Coach to plan the meet sheets and put swimmers in events that are best for the team, as well as, the individual swimmer.

  • Identify skills he or she observed during races that swimmers need to focus on in practice the upcoming week during meets.

  • Act as Interim Head Coach if Head Coach is absent.

  • Assist Head Coach to mentor swimmer coaches and management of coaching staff.


Minis Coach

  • Lead all Mini practices with a focus on 1) safety, 2) fun, 3) developing comfort in the water, including deep water, 4) developing swim positions, including floating on your belly and back on the surface, streamline and diving positions, and 5) learning Freestyle and Backstroke, working to the point of comfortably swimming 25 meters.

  • Lead initial Minis Assessments and group Minis based on ability and reasonable parent requests. 

  • Lead and recruit swimmer volunteers and monitor their hours to support the mini program. Contractor has the authority to replace underperforming swimmer coaches.

  • Create a written plan for practices including a schedule of skills that will be taught and when the minis will use the deep end and share with the Head Coach to balance the use of space and resources.

  • Work collaboratively with Head Coach to evaluate swimmers who may be ready to move up; swimmers or techniques that they have questions about; and any need for space (a lane to practice swimming 25’s, sharing the deep end, etc.)

  • Lead the Mini Swim at all home meets.

  • Monitor swimmers in the water and should be positioned on deck or in the water to maximize safety.  Coaching from a chair is not acceptable.

  • Come dressed to swim and plan to spend time in the water each day.

  • Direct swimmer volunteers to be spaced appropriately to monitor all Minis for safety.
