Job Description

Job Title: Assistant Coach, NVSL Summer Swim Team
Location: Hunt Valley Swim Club, Springfield, VA
Team: Hunt Valley Stingrays

Position Overview:
The Hunt Valley Stingrays are seeking a positive, high-energy Assistant Coach to join our vibrant and hard-working swim community for the 2025 season. In partnership with the Head Coach, the Assistant Coach will focus on stroke development, technique, and race strategies while fostering team spirit, promoting good sportsmanship, and ensuring the swimmers have fun. With approximately 180 swimmers, the Stingrays competed in the Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL) Division 2 in 2024.

Season Overview:

  • Start Date: Late May with evening practices until school ends (mid-June), then morning practices until the Individual All-Stars meet at the end of July.
  • Meets:5 Saturday "A" meets
    • 3–4 Monday "B" meets
    • Time Trials in early June
    • Relay and Individual Divisionals in July
    • “Rally in the Alley” Developmental Relay Meet
    • All-Stars and IM Invitational in late July
  • Other Events:
    • Team pep rallies on Friday evenings
    • Team social events including an end-of-season banquet.

Key Responsibilities
:
  • Attend all practices, meets, and official team events.
  • Provide stroke development and swim technique coaching to all swimmers.
  • Offer constructive feedback to swimmers during and after meets, including by reviewing and remediating disqualifications.
  • Facilitate team cheers, lead pep rallies, and build a positive team culture.
  • Help nurture the development of top performers and support their goals at Divisional and All-Star meets.
  • Work closely with the Lil’ Rays program.
  • Adhere to NVSL standards of conduct and promote good sportsmanship among athletes.
  • Help supervise and mentor a team of Junior coaches.
  • Help create and implement daily practice plans, including drills for all age groups (8 & under, 9-12, 13 & over).
  • Help strategize and prepare for competitive Saturday "A" meets by helping create meet lineups and approve entries in Swimtopia.
  • Help prepare meet sheets for Monday "B" meets and vet all meet entries.
  • Collaborate with data volunteers, Team Representatives, and the pool board to exchange data, prepare for meets, and coordinate the season.


Qualifications
:

The ideal candidate will have each of the following qualifications:

  • Prior coaching experience at the college, high school, or club level.
  • Strong knowledge of NVSL rules and procedures.
  • Ability to develop weekly practice schedules for varying age groups.
  • Excellent communication skills with children, parents, volunteers, and coaching staff.
  • Experience managing swim meets and coaching staff.
  • Certifications in CPR/First Aid, Lifeguard/Water Safety, and Fairfax County Pool Operator (or the ability to obtain them).
