Job Title Assistant Head Coach - 2024 Summer Season

About our Team: The Shouse Village Shark Swim Team is seeking an Assistant Coach for the 2024 summer swim season, who can bring leadership, fun, dedication, and good technical skills to the teams.  Located in Vienna, VA near Wolf Trap, the Shouse Sharks swim team has a deep history with the NVSL for many decades. We are a swim team of 90 to 110 swimmers ranging from ages 4 to 18 comprised of both a developmental and competitive swim team. The Shouse Sharks mission is to create a fun healthy environment that encourages kids to their best, recognizes their contributions and prides itself on a supportive, fun team environment throughout the summer.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Head Coach to prepare for, and coach the meets during the 2024 season (season starts the Tuesday after Memorial Day and ends the last week of July). Meet schedule includes:
    • 5 Divisional Dual or “A” Meets held on Saturday mornings
    • 4 Developmental or “B” Meets held on Monday evenings
    • Time Trials Meet held in early June
    • Relay-Carnival held on a Wednesday in June
    • Divisionals held in July
    • All-Stars (Individual and Relays) held in July
  • Help oversee practice each week (Monday to Friday). Practice begins in the afternoons the Tuesday after Memorial Day until FCPS school ends, then transitions to mornings until the end of July. 
  • Prepare for meets and attend meetings with the Head Coach, junior coaches, and team representatives throughout the season.
  • Attend NVSL Coaches Clinic.
  • Develop feedback for swimmers after each meeting in coordination with the other coaches (DQs, technique, turns, individual and relay starts, etc.).  
  • Attend and participate in most team social functions (e.g., Friday evening peprallys, 13&up events, and end of the season banquet) and swimmer recognitions (e.g., swimmer of the week and psych monster).
  • Assist Head Coach in coordinating developmental team (i.e., Minisharks) throughout the summer.

Qualifications include: 

  • High school graduate.
  • Prior swim coaching experience is preferred.  
  • Competitive swim experience required.
  • The ability to develop weekly practice schedules.  
  • The ability to effectively communicate with children, team representatives, parents, volunteers and coaching staff. s
  • A positive, fun attitude with the ability to encourage positive swimmer development.
  • Must have (or obtain) current certifications: CPR/First Aid, Lifeguard/Water Safety, NVSL SafeSport, and Fairfax County Pool Operator.
