The North Springfield Swim Club summer swim team, the Dolphins, is seeking one experienced Head Coach and 1-2 Assistant Coach(es) for the 2019 swim season. The ideal candidates would have Head and/or several years of Assistant coaching experience, strong leadership and communication skills, the ability to connect with children from grades K-12, and a strong enthusiasm for the sport of swimming and instilling a love for the sport in young swimmers. A key component of the coaches’ jobs would also be to guide older swimmers on the team in working with younger swimmers during practices and for the developmental program, the Little Flippers. The coaches will also work closely with our Swim Team Representatives and parent volunteers to ensure swim team events run smoothly and are fun for swimmers.

In our Head Coach we are looking for a high-energy, motivated individual to lead approximately 80 swimmers of all ability levels and ages in our developmental and competitive summer swim league as well as coordinating and managing our assistant and junior coaches. The Head Swim Coach, has duties and responsibilities to organize, implement, manage and direct morning and evening practices. They will instruct swim team members in how to use equipment and proper technique for swimming competitions and guide swimmers in proper sportsmanlike conduct. The Head Coach will also be responsible for seeding swimmers for A meets in collaboration with the swim team representatives and ensuring that swimmers have an opportunity to swim events in B-meets. The head coach will be responsible for coordinating the Little Flippers program—recruiting, instructing, and overseeing junior coaches—and ensuring the program teaches fundamental swimming skills to participants.

Our Assistant Coach(es) will be an individual(s) who can support the Head Coach in practices and team events as well as contributing to meet seeding and collecting information from swimmers for B-Meets.  They will support the Head Coach in coaching and leading the swim team members in competitive swimming activities by establishing an environment that fosters positive team attitudes, encourages self-discipline, sportsmanship, and responsibility.

Both positions will require the coaches to be in the water and interacting with the swimmers on occasion.

The Head Coach is expected to lead morning and evening practices. Assistant coach(es) are expected to participate in morning and evening practices as agreed to with the Head Coach and swim team rep (pay will be commensurate with expected participation). Head and assistant coaches will also be required to participate in occasional team spirit events and the team’s end of season banquet.

North Springfield’s Swim Season evening practices will start on Monday, June 3 with afternoon practices Monday-Friday.  Once Fairfax County Public Schools have ended for the school year, practices are held in the mornings Monday-Friday and evenings Monday-Thursday (unless precluded by a B-meet, relay carnival, or other pool event). Little Flippers practice 2-3 days a week in the evenings after Fairfax County schools have ended for the school year.

Competitive (A) meets are held on Saturday mornings throughout Northern Virginia from mid-June through the end of July. Developmental (b-meets) are held on Monday evenings. Relay Carnival occurs on a Wednesday evening mid-season.
