Job Title Head Swim Coach - 2024 Summer Season
Job Description
The Virginia Run Riptide, Division 5 (2023), NVSL Swim Team, is seeking a head coach for the summer of 2024, from
May 27 th (the day after Memorial Day) through July 27 th . The team is comprised of approximately 200 team
swimmers ranging in age from 5 – 18.

The Head Coach is responsible for managing all aspects of the swim program: overseeing the assistant and junior
coaches, lane and specialty coaching, running practices and drills, seeding A meets, managing swimmers and
coaching at both NVSL & WFDL meets, and attending swim team social events during the season. A full team
calendar will be determined and provided prior to the season. The Riptide is looking for a long-term coach for the
team.

We are looking for a professional and experienced coach who has great enthusiasm for children and a passion for
coaching. Important qualities for our next coach include:
  • Excellent communication skills with children, coaches, team reps, and parents
  • Ability to teach and motivate swimmers of all ages and skill levels
  • A coach who will foster a competitive swim environment for the Riptide while emphasizing sportsmanship and fun
  • A leader who will develop and encourage team spirit in the swimmers and the coaches

Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:
  • Prepare and lead all practices for the swim team
  • Seed swimmers for all NVSL meets and approve swimmers’ stroke selection for WFDL meets
  • Work with all swimmers and instruct coaching staff to improve swimmers technical swimming ability in an environment that is conducive to swimmer retention and enjoyment
  • At all times conduct oneself in a professional manner, leading by example in showing the proper level of respect and sportsmanship to Riptide and opposition swimmers, coaches, parents and all officials
  • Assist in recruiting and interviewing assistant and junior coaches. Supervise and mentor the coaching staff, working together to conduct practices, manage meets and coordinate team-building activities along with team reps
  • Prepare for, participate in, and attend all NVSL Dual Meets, all Western Fairfax Developmental League Meets, Time Trials, Relay Event meets, and Individual Divisional/All Star Meets
  • Provide feedback to swimmers on progress and goals, and communicate with parents effectively and in a timely manner
  • Work with team reps on all aspects of the swim team
  • Prepare meet sheets in coordination with the Riptide Swim Team Representatives according to NVSL and WFDL rules
  • Attend and participate in team social functions
  • Attend all required NVSL Coach’s Meetings and Clinics
Requirements
  • Previous head swimming coaching experience or extensive assistant coaching experience
  • Familiarity with NVSL rules and USA swimming rules
  • Ability to demonstrate and teach all strokes, turns, starts and finishes correctly
  • Knowledge of best practices and training techniques for successful competitive swimming
  • General knowledge or willingness to learn Hy-Tek Team Manager software
  • Strong communication, organization and leadership skills.
  • Ability and experience working with children of all ages, ability and competitive levels
  • Fairfax County Pool Operator license, lifeguard and CPR certification, preferred
  • Background Check and USA Swimming Athlete Protection Training
Coaching Compensation: Compensation will be commensurate with experience and in line with the average rate
