Job Description

Highland Park Hurricanes – Head Coach Position

The Highland Park Hurricanes summer swim team is seeking a Head Coach for the 2022 swim season. The Hurricanes currently compete in Division 11 of the Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL), although that is subject to change. The team includes approximately 110 – 120 swimmers at all age and ability levels. Highland Park also operates a developmental team, Tropical Storm, that includes approximately 30 swimmers and falls under the responsibility of the head coach.

The ideal candidate would have previous head coaching and/or assistant coaching experience, strong leadership and communication skills, the ability to connect with children from grades K-12, and a strong enthusiasm for the sport of swimming and instilling a love for the sport in young swimmers. Additionally, the candidate is high-energy, positive, and focused on developing all swimmers in a fun environment. Our team’s focus is not only on stroke technique but also sportsmanship, teamwork, and team spirit!

The head coach will be assisted by one assistant coach and will manage several other junior lane coaches.

Our program starts after Memorial Day weekend and runs through the first week of August. Practices start with weekday afternoon sessions until school lets out then switches to weekday mornings for the rest of the season. Swim meets are generally Saturday mornings and Monday evenings.

Qualifications:

  • Previous coaching experience
  • Knowledge of NVSL and USA swimming rules
  • Experience in seeding meets
  • Experience managing others
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Lifeguard Certified
  • CPR and First Aid Certified
  • Pool Operator Certificate, if not currently certified willing to secure at the team’s expense
  • Positive approach - Winning is fulfilling but building a great team is how you measure yourself.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient with hi-tek software

Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain a fun, encouraging environment for swimmers of all ages and ability levels.
  • Create and maintain effective working relationships with the team’s leadership and members.
  • Attend all practices, meets, team events, and NVSL events (including social events, pep rallies, NVSL meets, and setup and breakdown of meets)
  • Create practice plans and lead practices for swimmers at all levels of ability, including dry land practices in the event of inclement weather (all four strokes should be covered, as well as dives, turns, and finishes)
  • Develop individual swimmer’s technique and provide feedback to all swimmers
  • Ensure all swimmers receive constructive and appropriate feedback during practices and at meets
  • Prepare swimmer lineups for meets
  • Manage coaching staff including assigning responsibilities for practices and meets
  • Foster importance of teamwork and team spirit
  • Interact with team reps, parents, swimmers, and fellow coaches in a professional manner
  • Conduct yourself as a positive role model
  • Keep open lines of communication with team representatives
